Steven Spielberg가 2015년에 감독한 Bridge of Spies는
냉전 문화를 이해하기 위해 볼만한 최근 영화 중 아마도 가장 최신 것일 듯.
주인공은 변호사 James B. Donovan으로 그는 냉전 시대에 미국에서 오랫동안 스파이로 활약했던 소련 스파이 Rudolf Abel을 헌법 정신과 직업 윤리에 맞게 적극 변호, 사형을 면하게 하여 논란을 일으켰지만, 5년 후에 소련과 동독에 구금 상태로 있었던 미 조종사, 유학생과 Abel을 성공적으로 교환시킨다는 실화를 바탕으로 함. Donovan은 나중에 Bay of Pig 실패 후 쿠바에 잡혀 있던 1,113명의 석방을 위하여 쿠바로 건너가 Castro와 만나 협상 끝에 5천3백만불 어치의 음식과 의약품을 제공하는대신 9,703명의 석방이라는 성과를 거둠.
영화는 미국 체제의 우월성을 (당연히) 보여주면서도 돌아보면 냉전 문화가 얼마나 어처구니 없는지를 드러내며 사회의 주류를 거슬렀다는 이유로 Donovan이 받았던 위협과 냉소가 과연 지금은 완전히 사라졌는지 묻고 있기도 함. 인상 깊었던 대화 일부. CIA 요원 Hoffman은 Donovan에게 접근해 Abel이 무슨 이야기를 했는지 알아내려 함. Donovan은 변호인으로서 그건 규정을 어기는 것이라면서 거절함.
그러자 Hoffman은 국가안보에 대한 사항이라면서 규정은 이 경우 통하지 않는다고 함. 이에 대한 Donovan의 일갈은 아래 확인. 과거 냉전 시대의 이야기이고 미국처럼 다문화, 다민족의 국가는 아니지만 최근 한국 사회에서도 규정/규칙/무엇보다 헌법의 의의가 그 어느 때보다도 절실하게 와 닿는 듯....
