Unity of Time: Past, Present, and Future

소위 보편적 가치라는 표현은 그 어느 때든 조심스럽게 써야 했음.

역사적으로 힘 있는 자들에게 보편적인 것이 그렇지 못한 사람에게는 특정적인 경우가 많았음.

동서고금을 막론하고 보편적인 가치가 전혀 없다는 말은 아님.

역사로부터 교훈을 얻지 못하면, 현재와 미래가 없다는 것이 한 예.

 

이러한 시각을 T. S. Eliot은 Four Quartets 중 "Little Gidding"에서 피력함

원숙한 시기에 기독교 신앙을 바탕으로 쓴 작품이지만,

30대에 그가 The Waste Land에서 고전의 조각들로 보여준 역사의식의 흔적을 볼 수 있음.

그중 한 대목.

 

What we call the beginning is often the end

And to make and end is to make a beginning.
The end is where we start from. 

. . . . . .
We die with the dying:
See, they depart, and we go with them.
We are born with the dead:
See, they return, and bring us with them.
The moment of the rose and the moment of the yew-tree
Are of equal duration. A people without history
Is not redeemed from time, for history is a pattern
Of timeless moments.
