Ivory TowerREAD 2015. 7. 15. 15:49
[The Cooper Union
It is a tremendous irony
that an institution should desendeudar people
she take that kind of debt.
The idea that Cooper Union consider charge tuition
It was a great betrayal and a trend where the education is.
Students are not considered entitled to an education,
and institutions feel free to continue increasing the price.
What's wrong with higher education in this country?
Why are seen as exclusive to the rich only?
People ignore the functions fulfilled education
through history as a public good.
But in 1970, they made life difficult for students.
We see her education as a public good
see it exclusively as a private good.
RONALD REAGAN - California Governor - 1967-1975
Los conservative governors, in particular, Reagan of California,
had the idea that higher education was a waste of taxpayers money.
Governor Reagan said that the state should not subsidize intellectual curiosity.
And then he ran for president and promised to dissolve the Ministry of Education.
Certain directors began to say to be paid by any private benefit.
The free word is a word that is misused.
We speak of "free education."
Education is not free. It costs money.
If it is something that will be good for people
to get a job and earn more money, finance and investment should make themselves.
We have to keep the government out.
Let people develop their skills, solve their problems.
We stop expanding higher education graduation rates continued to increase,
and decreased access of the poor to higher education.
In the seventies, a Pell grant was enough to pay for tuition
in an average public institution.
But today the Pell grant pays part of tuition.
This grew the loan industry
it ended up being the largest source of money to enroll.
STUDENT LOANS FOR YEAR - 5113 BILLION
[...]
The combined debt of the country in these loans reached $ 1 trillion.
It is larger than credit card debt in the country.
The average student now graduates with a debt of more than 325,000.
