In a leaked email exchange with studio heads, Aaron Sorkin (Oscar-winning writer of 

The Social Network, Steve Jobs, and The Newsroom) complained about the so-called 

difficulty of adapting a movie with an Asian protagonist 

because "there aren't any Asian movie stars."

 

#StarringJohnCho is a social movement that literally shows you 

what it would look like if today's Hollywood blockbusters cast an Asian-American actor

--specifically, John Cho*--as their leading man.

 

Today, only 1% of lead roles go to Asians. But if studies show that 

films with diverse casts result in higher box office numbers and 

higher returns on investments for film companies, 

why doesn't Hollywood cast lead actors to reflect this fact?

 

But a future is coming when an Asian-American actor is the next tent pole star. 

#StarringJohnCho creates a reality that brings that vision of tomorrow's Hollywood to today.

여기서 John Cho는 아시아계 미국배우를 상징한다고 볼 수 있음. 

참고로 한국계 미국인 배우인 그는 최근 Star Trek에서 Sulu 역할로 널리 알려졌지만

실은 오래 전 (미국 사회 내 인종/성 차별을 코미디의 양식으로 다룬) 

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle의 주연배우였고

수많은 영화와 텔레비전에 조역, 단역으로 출연해온 멋진 베테랑 배우임.

아래는 이 캠페인에 올라온, 백인 남성을 John Cho로 대체한 

최근 할리우드 흥행작의 포스터 몇 개.

물론 이미 낯선 포스터들이라서 다른 배우를 상상하기 쉽지 않지만

그럼에도 저 중심 자리의 아시아계 미국인의 모습이 낯설게 보인다면

이미 우리 안에 자연스럽게 놓인 인종과 성에 대한 고정관념과 연계될 수도...

당연히도 아시아계 미국 문제는 출간된 지 십 수년 지난 문학 책 논의가 아니라 현재 진행 중인 문제...
