시간

MT에 다녀옴. 최근 올해처럼 많은 학생들이 온 적이 없던 듯하고 

그 중 그렇게 학과 점퍼를 많이 입고 온 적은 없던 듯. 나도 입고 갔음. -_-

표정들이 밝고 활발해서 좋은 기운을 느꼈음.

장소인 고사리도 처음과 달리 갈수록 정이 좀 든다는 느낌.

아래는 저녁 식사 후 잠시 거날다가 본 고사리 수련원 윗쪽 정경.

주로 신입생들을 바라보면서 정말 시간이 빨리 흘러갔다는 새삼스러운 생각.

그들에게 1학년 때 영문학입문이 얼마나 힘들었는지 이야기해주었는데,

정말 신입생 당시 몇몇 장면들이 신기하게 머릿 속에 남아 있음.

물론 많이 변했지만, 어떤 면에선 변하지 않은 면이 있음. 

시간은 인간에게 어떤 기능을 하는 것일까?

 

물론 새로운 생각거리가 아니지만 최근에 (며칠에 나눠 본 -_-) 

영화 A Late Quartet에서 시간 문제가 흥미롭고 낯설게 다가옴.

25년째 사중창단을 유지하고 있는 네 명의 주인공들이 

원로 격인 크리스토퍼 월킨(Christopher Walken, 아래 배우)이 퍼킨스에 걸려 하차하려 하자 

그동안 마음에 묻어두었던 사연과 감정들로 인하여 갈등과 화해를 겪는다는 내용.

젊은 시절 광기로 눈이 부리부리하던 월킨은 너무나 중후하고 깊이 있는 배우가 되어

아래 음대에서도 강의하는 역할을 정말 그럴싸하게 소화함.

근데 수업 전 그는 T. S. 엘리엇의 Four Quartets 중 

첫 번째 작품 "Burnt Norton"의 일부를 (편집해서) 읽음

엘리엇의 이 시는 The Waste Land의 실험주의적이고 파격적인 시학과 달리

노년을 맞은 거장 시인이 시간과 종교에 대한 혜안이 담겨 있음.

아래는 월킨이 읽은 대목. 그 아래는 학부 시절 개인적으로 깊은 인상을 받은

Four Quartets 의 마지막 작품 "Little Gidding"의 두 대목..
